Night Rating
After obtaining a Private Pilots Licence, a student has the option to go on to completing the Night Rating course. This course enables a pilot to fly at night. Requirements:
- Hold a valid PPL or higher license;
- Complete a minimum of 10 hours dual Instrument Instruction, of which a maximum of 5 hours can be done on our helicopter simulator;
- Complete a minimum of 1 hour dual night circuits; (5 take offs & landings)
- Complete a dual cross country flight;
- Successfully complete a theoretical examination;
- Have passed a practical night test with an approved instructor.
Instrument Rating
The Instruments (IF) Rating teaches pilots how to fly and navigate with reference to instruments only. It can form part of the Commercial Pilots Licence preparation, but can also be done separately.
Sling Rating
The Sling Rating entails training a pilot to operate a helicopter with a load suspended from a hook under the machine. Minimal requirements:
- Must hold at least a Helicopter Commercial Pilot Licence;
- 250 hours of flight time as pilot-in-command;
- 5 hours flight time of sling training undertaken with a Grade I or Grade II Flight Instructor.
Game Rating
Game Rating enables you to act as pilot-in-command of a helicopter engaged in game or livestock cull operations. Requirements:
- Must hold at least a Commercial Pilot Licence;
- Must have flown at least 100 hours as pilot-in-command of a helicopter of which a minimum of five hours of flight time of game or livestock operations must have been undertaken under the supervision of an instructor.
Instructor Rating
Once you have obtained your Instructors Rating you will permitted to act as an instructor doing helicopter pilot training. You may start the training towards Instructor Rating while training for your Commercial Pilot License. In order to obtain the instructors rating one needs to:
- Hold a CPL(H)
- Complete a minimum of 80 hours of briefings;
- Complete a minimum of 20 hours of practical flight training with an instructor;
- Successfully complete two (2) theoretical examinations;
- Have passed an oral and a practical examination.
